"Acts as/serves as/functions as" can be key phrases when using an analogy, which can help explain complex concepts to broader audiences. Like "xylem acts as a straw for plants to suck up vital nutrients they use for energy". I lean toward getting rid of this one, and accepting the risk of people using more words than they need.
